A coffee table provides an additional surface for displaying some of your favorite things. An important rule, which you should always remember – the items on your coffee table should feel layered, not cluttered.
Designing a coffee table is similar to designing a room – you should start with bigger items, such as a large tray and coffee table books. This will be your firm foundation onto which other objects can be layered. Limit your stack to a maximum of three books, so the coffee table doesn’t look cluttered. You can then add decorative objects such as candles, bowls or decorative boxes. It is important to pick objects with various heights – it will give the table a more interesting and dynamic feel.
Also, try to combine different textures, for example: bleached wood goes well with clear glass and marble whilst a rich oak table will look great paired with mother-of-pearl and some bronze accessories. Lastly, layer in a natural element such fresh flowers in a vase or a potted orchid. The secret is to experiment with scale, form and texture until you achieve the ideal look.
