You want to make sure that the rug in your space is as large as the room can handle. One of the main functions of a rug is to pull the room together, not chop it up.
Nothing is worse than a postage stamp for a rug. Make sure that at least two of the legs on each piece of furniture are on the rug, but optimally, every piece will sit completely on top of the rug. The exception is in the dining room, where all of the legs must be on top of the rug. For comfort and safety, the rug should go 30 to 36 inches beyond the edge of the dining table.
When placed underneath a bed, a rug should stick out about four to five feet on all three sides. Other options include a runner for alongside the bed, however, be sure the runner doesn’t extend beyond the foot of the bed.
