Design tips and ideas for creating a beautiful and practical home office

Some important tips on how to design your workspace.

  1. First you have to determine whether or not your office space needs any renovation such as new flooring, wall coloring or new window treatments.
  2. You need to measure the room and draw a floor plan. This is very easy; remember to include windows, doors, electrical outlets and lights.
  3. Once you have an accurate scale plan you can purchase the furniture that fits your space.
  4. The desk needs to be big enough to accommodate your laptop or computer, while giving you space to take notes or sort files.  (Tip: don’t put the desk up against the wall.  Looking at the wall can make you feel uninspired and boxed in).
  5. Position your desk close to the window to benefit from as much daylight as possible. When it comes to window treatments you can choose shutters, which allows you to control the amount of light coming in to your office. Another option is curtains, which can also help you to block glare if you’re your computer screen is near a window.
  6. If you’re up and down from your desk a lot, choose a swivel chair.
  7. It’s crucial to incorporate plenty of storage solutions into your design. If     you have the space available, cabinets or built-ins are ideal for storing larger items. (Tip:make sure you allow enough room for displaying items that aren’t work-related, something that inspires you- a piece of artwork, a collection of objects, inspiriting quotes, etc.)
  8. When you’re short on space, consider taking advantage of the vertical space (rather than always extending wide). Easy-to-install floating shelves or bookcases are a practical way to maximize your office area
  9. In addition to your main workspace, think about incorporating an additional seating area for holding discussions or meetings with clients.
  • The colours that you choose to decorate your space can have a strong impact on your moods. Some of us focus better when surrounded by a largely neutral colour palette, however for others, bright colours are the perfect choice to inject energy and feel motivated in their office space.
  • Flowers and other plants are a great way to add a little liveliness to the area.

P.S. Believe it or not, many business people use the principles of Feng Shui when decorating their home offices.  If you are looking to attract wealth and abundance for your home based business here are some ways to incorporate the rules of Feng Shui:

  • You should always sit with a solid wall behind your back. Avoid sitting with a window behind you.
  • You should not have a wall facing you while you are at your desk working.
  • Keep your desk and surrounding areas clutter free. The Chinese do not use paper trays J.

I wish you all luck creating your own home office, which will keep you motivated and inspired!
