Balancing Function and Style in Your Bathroom Design
When redesigning a bathroom, it's easy to get caught up in aesthetic ideas and dream-like images, but functionality is just as crucial to making the space work for you. I’ve learned this through my design journey—the balance between form and function is key. When you’re in the process of reimagining your bathroom, consider these elements:
Lighting Is Key
Good lighting is essential for tasks like applying makeup or shaving. From experience, sconces mounted on either side of the mirror provide the most flattering and practical light. Downcast lighting can cast harsh shadows and accentuate areas we’d rather not highlight (dark circles, anyone?). Adding low-level floor lighting can also be incredibly practical for creating a soft, guiding glow at night without the harsh glare.

Choose a Practical Basin
While a sculptural basin may look stunning, practicality must lead the way. A basin that's too shallow or oddly shaped can leave you with water splashes all over the counter. Trust me, choosing a basin that balances beauty with functionality makes life a lot easier!
Towel Rails and Storage
Towel rails should be easily accessible—ideally placed close to the shower or bath. No one wants to walk across the room dripping wet for a towel! I’ve learned that plenty of storage is also a must. Whether it’s built-in cabinetry, open shelving, or an organized cupboard, having a place for all your lotions, towels, and necessities keeps the space looking tidy and functional.

Decide on Your Focal Point
When I plan a bathroom layout, I always think about the focal point. The bath should ideally be the centerpiece—not the toilet! This sets the tone and creates a sense of balance in the room.
Ultimately, your bathroom should be a blend of reality and aspiration—a place where practical needs are met while still offering a touch of luxury. The best designs, I’ve found, are those that consider the real-life flow of the space and how it fits into your daily routine.
